Jesmond Food

I couldn’t possibly have squeezed the Jesmond food scene into my Newcastle post, so this one’s going to be all about my favourite foodie spots of the cutest little place that I spent 2 years living while at Uni. For those that don’t know, Jesmond is the area in Newcastle which most students go to live after first year and is home to some of my favourite places to eat.

Fat Hippo

Although they also have one in the city centre, the Jesmond Fat Hippo is hands down the best (plus I lived 3 mins walk from it). Anytime my family came to Jesmond, there would be a domestic about whether we would go here or 1901 (keep reading to hear about this one). Don’t quote me on this but I’m guessing the name originates from what you will feel like after visiting this house of carbs. This is the type of place you won’t have a ‘favourite’ because every burger is as good as each other. You can guarantee they’ll add some specials to their menu at Halloween, valentines, Christmas, or any chance they get to try out a new flavour really! My only criticism for this amazing restaurant is… WHERE HAVE THE MAC AND CHEESE BALLS GONE!?!?

Café 1901

As you heard from the first review, 1901 is on par with Fat Hippo for my favourites of Jesmond. The only decider for which to visit is how hungry you are. If you’re starving and craving a burger, get yourself to Fat Hippo, but if you want some nice tasty lunch, coffee, cake or all-day breakfast, café 1901 is your place. The unique selling point is their cute little church location decorated with all sorts of traditional bits and pieces that will catch your eye while you sip your coffee. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a go-to meal here, and that meal would be… Club sandwich and Biscoff milkshake (and sometimes a side of hash browns if I’m extra hungry). Unfortunately, this is also lots of people’s favourite lunch spots, so prepare to queue… it’ll be worth it.

Cake stories

Cake stories was my absolute go-to for a girly catch up, rainy day, celebration, hungover, (anytime really) kinda place. They do the BEST cakes in town and have the most inventive ideas for holiday celebrations, especially Easter. I can’t seem to go without getting their Oreo cake, so I usually share 2 cakes with my co-foodie Phoebe so we can try new flavours while still getting our Oreo fix. I think the Oreo one might also be vegan so can appeal to all foodies out there! What I love here is… they open late! What I don’t love so much… needs to be bigger! It’s ALWAYS busy, but that just shows how good this place is i suppose.

Francesca’s

All you need to know is that Italian is for tea and Francesca’s will sort you out. This place lets you have half pizza half pasta, YES you heard that right! Their menu is huge and such good pricing for how full you gon be. I love it here because it’s completely traditional and doesn’t need any fancy frills, it is what is it. I’ve found that there is no dress code; you’ll get students who’ve just finished sports training, to families out for a celebration so just go as you like. Francesca’s is kind of legendary, i don’t know how long its been around but whenever I told anyone I lived in Jesmond (even people from home) would say “ooh have you been to Francesca’s?”.

Holy Hobo

I think the hobo deserves a quick mention. Although not my favourite place for food in Jesmond (although still pretty good), they win hands down for their drinking and night scene. This newbie has students queueing out of the door for their dance floor and cheap drinks deals! If you haven’t been yet, GO!
