I was very lucky to be invited to the Potting Shed in Halifax a few weeks ago to try their new menu and give them some love over on my Instagram foodie page @northerneats_. I had been seeing some of my other foodie friends visit this place and was intrigued to try it for myself. I thought it would be good to dedicate a whole blog post to this visit as I’ve only yet written short bursts about my favourite places up North.

If the name doesn’t already give it away, you can tell from walking in the entrance that this restaurant is garden/botanical themed. All the décor is perfectly fitting, from the watering cans hanging above you to the flowerpot centrepieces, and all the other greenery in between. My only criticism would have to be the actual tables and chairs themselves. I felt they didn’t fit in with the ‘potting shed’ vibe and felt almost like they were going on their own theme. If it were me, I’d have some funky picnic benches and garden-type furniture to enhance their look.

As soon as we sat down we were greeted with a whole load of menus and deals. I love a good deal because if you’re saving money, that means you can order more food! We decided to get the train to Halifax so that we could take full advantage of the 2-4-1 cocktails. I decided to go for the Summer Breeze Cocktail, and both went down a treat.

We chose to give the starters a miss as we’d seen their desserts on Instagram and opted for those instead (the portions are way too big for 3 courses in my opinion). So, I chose the Crispy Duck Pizza, and what a shout it was. I was sceptical because I usually like my duck wrapped in a pancake with spring onions and hoisin. But this was a fabulous creation that I highly recommend if you want to try something a bit different. I imagine any of the pizzas were just as good, the base was so fluffy and delicious, but oh my were they filling!
As foodies, we knew to get 2 completely different meals, so Matthew went for the Pulled Pork Burger. I only managed to try a little before he wolfed it down, but he didn’t have a bad word to say about it (oh apart from the deep-fried gherkin on top but that’s just him being picky). We also treated ourselves to a side of beer-battered onion rings and were amazed at how tasty they were (some restaurants use frozen ones and they can be so disappointing).

And finally, onto dessert. We had seen photos of the desserts on Instagram before our visit and knew we had to make some room. I went for the Chocoholic Four Layer Chocolate cake served with chocolate ice-cream and chocolate sauce. It was an absolute monster and did, in fact defeat me. Matthew chose the Sticky Toffee Pudding (his ultimate favourite) and didn’t even wait for me to take a picture before diving in. So, I’m guessing he enjoyed his too!

We had a fab time at The Potting Shed and will definitely be returning. We didn’t have time on our visit, but next door “The Fire Pit” seems like a cool place to go for after-meal drinks or even pre-drinks for a night out, they have beer pong, sports nights, beer buckets, and even some snacks there for you too! Check it out and lemme know your thoughts.

Well Lucy I hope The Potting Shed are grateful for your review, it has certainly made me want to visit.
When you said Matthew was being picky with the gherkin, did you mean pickely 🤢, sorry couldn’t resist
