Durham Food

Since Durham was only a short train journey from Newcastle, we would often take trips down on a weekend to add a bit of culture to our uni life. If you haven’t been to Durham before, it is a lovely little town only 10 minutes from Newcastle and is home to the most wonderful cathedral and castle as well as a top-class university for those of you who are very clever! It’s the perfect place to eat, drink, socialise, row a boat down the river, shop, sightsee and much more. So, I’ll let you in on some of the best places to eat here since you’re all now dying to go…

Flat White Kitchen

This place was recommended highly by some Durham students I know and the queue outside reassured me this place was going to be good. This cute spot is right on the cobbled street as you walk up to the cathedral and castle, so perfect for a lunch/coffee break while you sightsee. I chose to opt for this chicken burger and sweet potato fries which was de-li-cious! But honestly, when I saw the pancakes come out I instantly knew I’d get the dreaded food envy that we all try to avoid. I’ve heard that there is another Flat White in Durham (Flat white café) a little hidden gem tucked away behind the one I visited. Get yourself on Instagram and check this little beauty out it looks so cute!

Tango

Now, this is turning out to be only a short blog post since after finding ‘Tango’ we didn’t end up trying any new places because it was just too good! This place is known for its almighty burgers in a pub-type restaurant right on the bridge over Durham’s river. It has to be noted that there is a Fat Hippo in Durham and if you’ve read my Jesmond blog post you’ll know my loyalties to their burgers, but I’ve heard from the students in Durham that you’re either a Fat Hippoer or a Tangoer (I wanna be both).

Old Tom’s Gin Bar

Not food, but who doesn’t need a cheeky gin after they’ve been out for tea? If you’re out for tea with Lucy, that’s what’s happening. This place looks like your typical old pub, but go inside and you’ll see one of the most extensive gin collections you’ve ever seen! Not only that, they have endless tonics and garnishes meaning it’ll take you all night to decide what to have. They don’t even have a bar in here, it’s quite backwards that you’re in the bar area while they make your gin, but that just adds character I think.

Also not food, but if you have the time on your day out, get yourself on one of Durham’s rowing boats and row down the river with you friends… you’ll be sure to have a laugh if your friends are as fab as mine!
