I discovered MOB Kitchen at university after being introduced by a fellow foodie. I was (and still am) amazed that you can get all of their recipes for free, and more so that you can feed a family for under £10! If you haven’t heard of MOB yet, obviously read on, but also check out their Instagram page because you’re sure to find something that takes your fancy.
One thing I LOVE about MOB is that they categorize their recipes into relatable sections (i.e. Comfort food, fakeaways, speedy meals, dinner party vibes etc), meaning you can find a tea for every occasion.
This blog post will be showcasing my top 5 MOB recipes that have been tried and tested (and I may have made some small alterations) so that you can get out your culinary god/goddess while there is quite literally nothing better to do.
Chicken Katsu Supreme
Recipe: http://www.mobkitchen.co.uk/recipes/chicken-katsu
So, this has to be my number 1 dish and is a winner with everyone who’s tried it. It a little less speedy than some of the recipes but gives Wagamama a run for their money… what who said that??

Step 1. Fry onions and garlic
Step 2. Add in slices carrots. Also put your rice on.
Step 3. Fry (or put in oven) your hand-breaded chicken (didn’t get a pic)
Step 4. Flip when golden
Step 5. Slice chicken and place on rice
Step 6. Cover it in your katsu sauce and finish with spring onion garnish.
My alterations:
- I’ve only ever used chicken breasts (not thighs) and works just as good.
- I never seem to have garam masala in, it’s still just as tasty.
- I’ve started to cook my breaded chicken in the oven on a generously oiled tray. It just means there are fewer pans to worry about and less mess in my opinion. I also slice my chicken into strips before breading them and they will cook quicker too. Give approx. 15/20 mins for them in a hot oven. (the pictures are from my first attempt at this which is why they’re fried – both just as good).
Bacon Rösti’s
Recipe: http://www.mobkitchen.co.uk/recipes/bacon-rosti
This is the ultimate of brunch teas! I’d never made rosti’s before (posh hash browns for any other northerners reading) and what a success these were! You could also so easily make them veggie by leaving out the bacon.

Step 1. Peal and grate potatoes and slice spring onions
Step 2. Cut and fry your bacon (or not if veggie). Once fried add in the spring onions
Step 3. Squeeze out the excess liquid from the potato’s and mix with the frying pan ingredients.
Step 4. Combine the mixture into patties and fry these in a generously oiled frying pan until golden.
Step 5. Toast your bagel, poach your eggs, and Bon Appetit.
My alterations:
– Our 1-a-week-in-and-out-as-quick-as-you-can supermarket shop doesn’t stretch to harissa paste, Greek yoghurt and parsley. But what we did have was bagels and eggs, so naturally, we made a brunch stack with a bagel bottom, rosti centre and a poached egg to sit on top. WHAT a meal!
Leek & Pancetta Risotto
Recipe: http://www.mobkitchen.co.uk/recipes/leek-pancetta-risotto
This was one of my first MOB creations back at uni after never making risotto before, and quickly became a staple dish in our humble abode. We discovered that it nicely lines your stomach before a night out, and makes a great hangover/soak-up meal for the day after. Or for the non-alcoholics out there, it’s a fab dish for any occasion.

Step 1. Fry your veg and bacon
Step 2. In a large pan melt some butter with onions.
Step 3. Add your Arborio rice and chicken stock (didn’t get a pic of this but its the longest part). Keep adding stock gradually until the rice has soaked it all up.
Step 4. Add in your other ingredient and garlic bread obvs.
Tips:
- Only one alterations for this one (add some frozen peas to brighten it up) as it’s pretty simple but what I would say is that this dish is a 2 man job. It requires constant love and attention (stirring) and isn’t one for the ‘I’ll cook while I watch friends’ and forget-all-about-it type.
- Also, we always added garlic bread because it’s yummy and about 48p.
Chicken Milanese Spaghetti
Recipe: http://www.mobkitchen.co.uk/recipes/chicken-milanese-spaghetti
Chicken Milanese is one of my favourite ‘out for tea’ dishes, who doesn’t love a meal that combines a massive breaded chicken with yummy pasta (and usually a side of garlic bread lets be honest). So, I made my own… with MOB’s help of course. This was a really simple dish and can’t believe I haven’t attempted it before!

I forgot to take photos of the stages of this on but its super easy and MOB is probably better at guiding you than i am!
My alterations:
- We didn’t have any garlic croutons so I improvised and mixed breadcrumbs with dry garlic granules and I cant see that it made much difference.
- Similar to the katsu curry I cooked the chicken in the oven for less fuss.
- And yes, I had a side of garlic bread, duh
Bacony Gnocchi Bake
Recipe: http://www.mobkitchen.co.uk/recipes/bacony-gnocchi-bake
This was another of our uni house specialities. There was always a lack of gnocchi in Aldi and we often couldn’t get a packet each, so we’d get the ingredients between us and make this dish together. It’s so simple and satisfying and is perfectly complemented by a night sitting on the couch with your besties watching Love Island or Friends.

Step 1. Fry your bacon, tomato’s and spinach
Step 2. Boil your gnocchi and add to the pan.
Step 3. Let this settle for a while and soak up the goodness.
Step 4. Put into a baking dish and top with mozzarella.
Step 5. Bake for 15 mins or so.
Step 6. Plate up with garlic bread of course and enjoy!
My alterations:
- The only thing we didn’t put in was basil because what student has basil!
- Oh, and yeah we had garlic bread again.

I enjoyed this post so much, now I’m hungry !
