The Big Food Quiz of Isolation

So, much like every other friendships group, family, work friends etc, me and my uni gal group have been quizzing each week of lockdown. It is honestly what’s keeping me sane and I’ve learnt so much random general knowledge. Did you know, in Dubai, you can get money for losing weight?! And that cream eggs were first made in 1971.

My quiz round last week consisted of a food-and-drinks round, duh. Although can’t believe it’s gotten to week 6 of lockdown for this to occur #fakefoodie. Anyway, I couldn’t believe some of the things I found out about the industry and wanted to share my fun facts with you guys. Please let me know if these are common knowledge, I was genuinely shocked by some lol.

1. McDonald’s

Taking top spot on my shocking facts (however, it seems more people know this that I thought), is McDonalds and their pre-shaped McNuggets. Did you know that they designed 4 nugget shapes with all our dipping and biting needs in mind… crazy. They even have names; bone, ball, boot, bell. I cannot wait for them to re-open so I can inspect this phenomenon myself.

2.Nutella

Next one is from our favourite pancake companion, Nutella. Did you know that 25% of all the worlds hazelnuts will make it into a jar of Nutella? This 25% is obviously the oxford and Cambridge lot amongst the hazelnut world.

3.Wagamama

Did you know that the name Wagamama means ‘self-indulgence’ in Japanese. I mean it makes sense, I’ve definitely self-indulged at many a visit to their restaurants.

4.French Fries

Did you know that French Fries actually originate in Belgium and not France! This was one I knew (surprisingly) because I’ve been on holiday to Belgium and eaten way too many of them. The story behind it started in WWI. The official language of the Belgian army was French, and when introduced to these fried potato snacks, they were nicknamed French fries by the soldiers. Interesting right!?

5. Surprise Pie

So, this one dates back to the 16th century and I’m more than relieved that it hasn’t been a tradition carried through history. A ‘Surprise Pie’ was a tradition for upper-class families to have live animals jump out of their pies… can you imagine the scenes!

These 5 were my faves and made it onto the quiz round but here are some other fun quick fires I have found from research:

  • Humans share 60% of their DNA with bananas.
  • Carrots used to be purple before the 17th century.
  • The plastic coloured twists holding the packaging on a bread loaf signify what day of the week the bread was made on. Whaaatt?!?
  • McDonald’s sells 75 hamburgers every second! Obvs not at the moment.
  • Consuming 4 or more teaspoons of nutmeg can cause hallucinations!
