So I haven’t blogged in a while mainly because of Christmas and being busy and the usual excuses. But that DOESN’T mean I haven’t been eating out as much so there will be lots more content to come I promise. If you’re following my Instagram @northerneats_ (if not why not) I’ve been more up to date on my posts so you can grab all your food inspiration from there for the time being.
Firstly, let me introduce you to Humblest of Pleasures, a completely vegan cafe in the heart of Hebden Bridge. Some people will know that Hebden Bridge is probably one of the most vegan populated towns in the North so you’ll do just fine here finding sow thing to satisfy your vegan cravings. I visited this cafe with a friend and without lying I was slightly apprehensive and we all know I’m a burger type of girl. I opted for the Mac ‘n’ cheese as I thought this was safest and once you got past the the brightness of the yellow cheese, it was actually not bad. Not the tastiest I’ve had but definitely not the blandness I was expecting. To be fair I was still hungry afterward so I got myself their Oreo cheesecake. And this ladies and gentleman made me rethink the whole vegan thing, it was delicious!!! Since then I have opted for vegan desserts without hesitation because whatever substitute they put in them, tastes bloody good.
Next, I came across this gem from Instagram and had to try them when I last went up to Edinburgh. Considerit makes artisan chocolate, doughnuts, and ice cream, and guess what… It is all plant based. See I didn’t even know this until devouring a whole doughnut and feeling I needed to give them some love on Instagram, where I saw their vegan edge. I loved this because previously I was probably one of those people that saw the vegan mark and believed they wouldn’t be as good as ‘the real thing’. But these doughnuts give a middle finger to that stereotype and I love them. My friend now treats me to one when I visit her up in Edinburgh, it’s definitely worth the trip.

I wanted to also give a shout out to Hotel Chocolat for their vegan efforts recently (as some people know I do work there now so maybe I’m slightly biased but who cares). So, previously, vegans coming into the shop would be shown to our dark chocolate selection mainly, with a few alternatives such as rose and violet creams and the gianduja bomb (which is the bomb tbf). But after years of creation, they have finally produced a vegan-life-changing product of Nutmilk. The 45% cocoa product imitating a milk chocolate with a hazelnut coffee edge is taking the world by storm. I can’t stop eating them at work! So if you’re a vegan that’s sick of dark chocolate, get down to one of the hotels (not actual hotels) and treat yourself to some Nutmilk (we apologise for the unfortunate name lol). I also recently attended one of the Hotel Chocolat lock ins with a friend that was vegan themed. These are fan events, only £10 each and it’s basically an exclusive chocolate tasting with free prosecco (and of course chocolate) and discount off products at the shop. They do different themed events but throughout January they’re completely vegan so I’d definitely recommend it!

So although this next one isn’t vegan, let’s be honest, most of you doing Veganuary are gonna get to Feb and tone it down a notch to veggie. So here’s one for you guys. This recipe was made by my best friend and fellow foodie using one of the Vegetarian Mob Kitchen recipes. Mob offer loads of good and cheap recipes for everyone from meat eaters, veggies, vegans, fake-away lovers, it’s so easy and fun and it’s all online too. This was her attempt of the Creamy Halloumi Curry and it looks fab!

We are due to visit Manchester in February and require a venue for an evening meal. Can Northern Eats recommend anywhere ? Something between fine dining and chain food eateries with a trendy decor, thank you

Hi Jane! I have a couple of places in mind that may fit your preference. El Gato negro is a lovely tapas on King street and has multiple floors depending on what vibe you’re wanting from your evening. I’ve also heard of a place called Three Little Words (not been but it looks fab!) it’s a restaurant, bar and distillery all in one and seems to have a trendy vibe. Hope this helps 🙂
